Learning Disability Support
What and how do we support the people we work with?
- Achievement in independent living skills such as cooking, cleaning, paying bills, shopping – people need to be in control of their lives.
- Being part of the community through involvement – attending clubs, church, using transport andthe locals shops and other amenities, and meeting neighbours – some of the people we support attend the local speedway one night a week, using the bus with support.
- Fulfilling aspirations and ambitions – we all have them. One of the people we support recently had a flying trip as part of his life’s ambition; another was accompanied to his beloved Liverpool and stood on the Kop.
- Enabling a feeling of belonging – we all need to belong. We do life story work with people to help them see they have a past, a present and a big future, and encourage families to be part of putting this together with photos, and memories.
- We facilitate active family participation, and if there hasn’t been a lot of contact we help the people we support make new contact and /or form new relationships.
- Finally, we work to get to the day when the people we support can say “I don’t need you so much anymore” – we will not be offended!
