Job Profile
The post-holder is a member of the Home Management Team and is accountable to the Manager for:
- Efficient management of the residential and day care resources of the Home.
- Provision of a high quality service for residents and visitors for day care within the policy and philosophy of the Company, and to any contract specification applicable.
- Participation in the management, with other members of the Home Management Team, of the provision of Company services for older people in residential, home or day situations.
- Assisting in the development of the Company through the promotion of existing and future services.
The post-holder is responsible for the supervision of care, domestic and catering services within the residential unit by working designated shifts covering a 24 hour period.
Whilst each Assistant Manager will have responsibility for the service during a shift, the team can only operate effectively if a consistent and unified approach is maintained towards those who live or work at the Home and all others whose services and contracts enhance the quality of life of service users. The fundamental principles of service provision are stated in the Philosophy and Aims of Isle Care 97 Ltd. The post-holder should also be familiar with the Aims and Objectives of the Home in which they are employed and should ensure that their practice, and that of the staff they supervise, accords with these principles.
Responsibilities will be for the following key areas:
Care Provision
- Ensure that personal care needs of customers are met, both by delegation of tasks and by directly undertaking as appropriate.
- Enables individuals to realise as fully as possible their potential in terms of their physical, social, emotional intellectual and spiritual well-being. Helps residents to participate in the life of the community to the maximum of their ability ensuring appropriate levels of support are available.
- Under the direction of the Manager, contributes to the assessment of need for individual residents in conjunction with the resident, other carers, professionals and volunteers.
- Participates in care planning, goal setting and reviews. Co-ordinates and implements a range of therapeutic activities to provide a number of available options in which residents may wish to engage.
- Ensures that the residents’ dignity and self respect are not undermined and in promoting their rights to independence, choices and privacy, recognise that responsible risk taking may be undertaken.
- Under the direction of the Primary Health Care Team, undertakes and supervises the care of ill and dying residents with accompanying regard for the emotional and psychological needs of other residents, relatives and staff.
- Makes arrangements, as directed by the Manager, for the reception of all residents, relatives, day care clients, etc.
Staff Management
- Participates in the recruitment and selection of staff.
- Undertakes, as delegated by the Manager, systematic attention to staff induction programmes, and provides necessary training.
- Leads and co-ordinates the staff group in response to the needs of residents who live in the Home and those who come for day care and short stays.
- Supervises all aspects of the work undertaken by the staff on duty and provides feedback to appropriate colleagues.
- Provides supervision for an allocated group of staff, undertakes reviews of their work performance and identifies individual training and development needs.
- Ensures that the agreed channels are used for staff expressing dissatisfaction or disagreement. Implements, in conjunction with the Manager and Personnel Manager, disciplinary action in line with the Company’s policy and guidelines.
- Participates in and contributes to staff training programmes as required by the Home Manager.
Service Delivery
- Responsible for the safety and security of the residents and staff at all times, and instigates procedures for the evacuation of the building, summoning appropriate personnel to deal with emergency situations and rectify faults as necessary.
- Ensures that the provision of food, monies and other goods and services are supplied to the resident within the standards and guidelines laid down by the Company. Advises the Manager of any service anomalies or deficiencies and of any complaints from service users.
- Advises the Manager of any supplementary services that may be needed for the resident and makes arrangements, as delegated, for these to be provided.
- Carries out the Company’s policy in relation to the safe handling of medicines.
- Ensures that a homely, attractive environment is maintained by constant appraisal and identification of shortcomings or potential for improvement.
- Prepares reports as required by the Manager or Central Office. Maintains records of residents admitted and discharged on a permanent, temporary or non-resident basis. Confidentiality must be observed at all times.
- Acts as the Company’s representative, demonstrating high professional and personal standards in liaising with members of the community, other professionals, statutory and voluntary agencies.
- Promotes the involvement and participation of relatives, members of the community and individual volunteers in the day to day activities of the Home. Provides channels of communication for residents and relatives, giving advice as to how complaints and dissatisfactions can be investigated.
The post-holder will participate in personal supervision with the Manager, to support and develop good practice, review performance and identify personal training needs.
As recommended by the Manager, will attend appropriate training sessions, including Health and Safety, Lifting and Fire Prevention.
The Manager may require other duties to be undertaken, as part of the services provided by the Home.
